BAPTISM

"Holy Baptism is the basis of the whole Christian life, the gateway to life in the Spirit (vitae spiritualis ianua), and the door which gives access to the other sacraments.  Through Baptism we are freed from sin and are incorporated into the Church and made sharers in her mission: 'Baptism is the sacrament of regeneration through water in the word.'"
--Catechism of the Catholic Church, 1213

Following the guidelines of the RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults), Adapted for Children of the Archdiocese of Miami, children ages 7 (seven) through 17 (seventeen) will celebrate the sacrament of Baptism as part of their faith formation in the Religious Education Program.  To celebrate Baptism, a minimum of two consecutive years of faith formation is required (three years in some cases, depending on the child's age), and the child must be in (at least) 3rd grade.  Please see the "General Sacrament Information" for more information.

Below are the guidelines and paperwork needed to begin the process of preparing for Baptism.

Once all the necessary documents have been obtained, they should be brought to the Office of Religious Education, where the Baptism Application Form will be filled out by the parents.

*PLEASE NOTE:  (for children 6 years of age and younger)
  • The following guidelines also pertain to regular community Baptisms  (ages 0-6 years at the time of Baptism).
  • For regular community Baptisms, all documents and paperwork should be brought to the Parish Office, where the parents will then fill out the Baptism Application Form for their child.
  • Only a parent can come to fill out the Baptism Application, and must present a valid picture I.D.
  • (Click the "St. Kevin Catholic Church" tab for the Parish Office hours, and for their contact information if you have any additional questions.)

Regular Community Baptisms (children ages 0-6) take place on the following Sundays:

 ENGLISHSecond Sunday of every month
SPANISHThird and Fourth Sunday of every month

**All Baptisms are in community.  There are NO Private Baptisms.

REQUIREMENTS

  • If the child is six (6) years old or younger, the Baptism will be done at the Regular Community Baptisms, and all paperwork referenced below needs to be brought to the Parish Office.  If the child is seven (7) years or older, the child must attend the Religious Education Program prior to being baptized.
  • Bring the birth certificate of the child.  The birth certificate is required to fill out an application and reserve a date.  The hospital birth record will NOT be accepted.
  • One of the parents MUST come to the office to fill out the registration form and bring a valid photo I.D.   When you fill out the form, please write clearly and legibly.
  • If you (the parents) are not parishioners of St. Kevin and do not live within the boundaries of the parish, bring a permission letter from your parish to baptize your child here.
  • Godparents:
    • If they are not parishioners of St. Kevin and do not live within the boundaries of the parish, they must bring a sponsor certificate from their parish.
    • They must be Catholic, at least 16 years of age, have received the sacraments of Baptism, Eucharist and Confirmation, and live a life of faith, which befits the role to be undertaken.
    • If married, they must be married in the Catholic Church.
    • One godparent, male or female, is sufficient.  But if there are two, they have to be male and female.
  • Parents and godparents of the child to be baptized are to be instructed on the meaning of the sacrament and the obligations attached to it.  Parents and godparents must attend an obligatory pre-baptismal instruction class which lasts approximately 1½ hours and will take place on   _________________________  (date and time).
  • If a parent or godparent does not live in Miami, that person may attend the pre-baptismal class in a parish in their area and bring a letter or certificate from that parish stating that he/she has received the pre-baptismal instruction.  This needs to be done ONE WEEK PRIOR to the date of the Baptism.
  • If the father or the mother does not live with the child, or he/she is not Catholic, and will not be present at the Baptism, please bring a notarized authorization letter in which that person gives his/her permission for the child to be baptized.  THIS IS AN INDISPENSABLE REQUIREMENT IN THESE SPECIAL CASES.
  • All paperwork must be submitted AT LEAST ONE WEEK PRIOR to the date of the Baptism.  Otherwise, the Baptism is subject to be postponed until the file is complete.
  • All Baptisms are in community: the second Sunday of the month in English and the third and fourth Sunday in Spanish at 2:30 pm.  There are NO private Baptisms.
