  FIRST WEEK OF ADVENT
SYMBOL:  HOPE

The season of Advent marks the beginning of the new Liturgical Year in the Church (on November 29).  The season lasts for 4 weeks, and it is a time in which we prepare ourselves for the celebration of the birth of our Savior, Jesus Christ, at Christmas.

The Advent Wreath is a symbol of the season and marks the time of the Advent Season.  There are four candles: three purple, and one pink.  The color of the Advent season is purple, a symbol of preparation and awaiting for the coming of Christ.  The candle for the third week is pink as a symbol of our joy and anticipation that the birth of Christ is ever near.

Each week has a theme that guides us in our preparation and reflection in this holy season of Advent.  The theme for the first week of Advent is HOPE.  We light the first purple candle on the Advent wreath.  As we begin the Advent Season, we remain hopeful in the promise of God to send his only-begotten son, Jesus, into the world to save us from sin.  We remain in hope as we await and prepare for the coming of the Savior into the world.
